DIRECTORY USA README.TXT File
Version 3.0
November 1997
This "README" file contains information to help you get
started as well as information about the program that
was not available when the documentation was created.
Information is included on the following topics:
Contents
--------
TOPIC 1: Preventive CD Maintenance
TOPIC 2: Context-Sensitive Help
TOPIC 3: Default Directory for DIRECTORY USA
TOPIC 4: The DIRECTORY USA Database
TOPIC 5: Performance with Large Search Results
TOPIC 6: Tips for Customizing Printed Output
TOPIC 7: Using the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5L
******************************************************
TOPIC 1: Preventive CD Maintenance
******************************************************
Dust and fingerprints on your Directory USA CDs can
make the data they contain difficult to read. To
avoid problems accessing the data on your CD's, please
make sure the CD is clean before placing it in the
CD-ROM drive.
******************************************************
TOPIC 2: Context-Sensitive Help
******************************************************
If you have a question about DIRECTORY USA while
you're operating the program, just press F1. In most
cases, this key opens the Help system directly to a
topic about your choices from your location in the
program.
The DIRECTORY USA development team created this
extensive system of links between the program and the
Help file to save you the time of looking up a topic
related to your question.
******************************************************
TOPIC 3: Default Directory for DIRECTORY USA
******************************************************
Any time you set up (install) DIRECTORY USA, the setup
program places several files on your hard drive. If
installing in Windows 3.1, the default directory is
called Dirusa3. If installing in Windows 95/NT, the
default directory is called Directory USA 3.0.
******************************************************
TOPIC 4: The DIRECTORY USA Database
******************************************************
Due to its large size, the DIRECTORY USA database is
not installed on your hard drive. This means a
DIRECTORY USA CD needs to be in the CD-ROM drive when
you wish to use the product.
Because the states are divided among the four
DIRECTORY USA CDs, you may need to switch CDs before
you search. The contents of each CD are listed below:
CD #1 (A-G) contains: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona,
Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware,
District of Columbia, Florida, and Georgia.
CD #2 (H-MN) contains: Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois,
Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Minnesota.
CD #3 (MO-O) contains: Mississippi, Missouri, Montana,
Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico,
New York, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio,
Oklahoma, and Oregon.
CD #4 (P-W) contains: Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah,
Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin,
and Wyoming.
******************************************************
TOPIC 5: Performance with Large Search Results
******************************************************
Sometimes a search will result in thousands (or more)
of matches. Once search results number above a
thousand records, the remaining search time will
increase. In this situation, we recommend that you
refine your search criteria to obtain a more
manageable number of matches.
You can refine a search by:
1) Entering additional information, if possible.
2) Running several searches.
3) Removing wildcards from your search criteria.
******************************************************
TOPIC 6: Tips for Customizing Printed Output
******************************************************
After the search results display, you can print or
preview the results. Printing the search results provides
you with a copy of the address records for reference at a
later time. You can customize the format of the information
being printed by hiding or resizing any of the fields being
displayed onscreen. Additionally, printing in landscape mode
may provide more room for printing all of the various fields
being used in the program. The portrait/landscape setting
is typically located on the setup or properties button of
the print driver.
******************************************************
TOPIC 7: Using the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5L
******************************************************
When using the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5L, make sure
you use it in PCL, rather than Host mode. Using Host
mode could create undesirable results.
******************************************************
